Drupal is great for social networking, although not always that evident. That's why I bundled my thought together as a tutorial ebook: Drupal 6:Ultimate Community Site Guide. This will give you a site like rawvegandating.com (D5) and drupalfun.com (D6).
If you are interested in the modules used, you can take a peak at the table of contents.

Greetings,
Dorien

Thanks for this comparison, based on your review I am checking out Dzoic Handshakes and Drupal, and getting hold of any reviews I can.

I agree Dzoic tops its competition, and Drupal sn modules dont seem to be ripe yet for high traffic.

The core of Handshakes is complete junk. It makes entirely way to many calls to the DB. It will NOT scale. They also code in their page to break browser caching. If anyone were to seriously use their code base for an actual social network, the site would fall flat on its face. Some of their 3rd party apps make well over 40 requests to the server to load one page--- returning nearly 530k of data. Imagine having just 100 users online at once.

Joomla is actually a fork of Mambo and if you check you will find that the reasons for the fork were never made public. Supposition that the "creator got greedy" is just that - supposition, not based on hard facts. Joomla has never been called Mambo. It's code was, but the Mambo name and project are still going strong.

I like Joomla, but vBulletin gets my vote. Like you said, you can do anything with it. I've actually seen an extremely customized version of vB turned into a successful social-network, too bad I forgot the url.

I haven't looked at Drupal yet.
