Attention music lovers! Vienna is your city! Every day, there are from one to three dozen live concerts in Vienna. You can check hotel listing websites such as venere.com in order to find the most suitable accommodation. And once you reserve your hotel, make sure to buy your tickets in advance as well. With so many choices, this is no easy feat. Well, here are my insider recommendations for the best concerts in my hometown of Vienna. You can also find the most popular sights and attraction in Vienna at Wien.info.
Where better to enjoy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s music than under his own roof? Mozart lived and composed music in a Viennese monastery with gorgeous frescoed ceilings. The intimate environment is a perfect place to listen to the four string players perform Mozart’s quartets and chamber music. This year the concerts are on November 20th and December 20th at the Monastery of the German Teutonic Order. Make sure to book ahead of time as this is one of Vienna’s most popular concerts.
Antonio Vivaldi in Baroque Churches
It is a little known fact that the Italian violinist and composer Vivaldi spent time living in Vienna. In fact, he died right here in my hometown. The fantastic baroque churches of St. Charles Borromeo and the Church St. Anna regularly stage the Four Seasons, which is Vivaldi’s most renowned and famous opera. This year the Four Seasons will be in production from March 20th to November 13th and St. Charles Borromeo and from November 18th to March 28th at St. Anne’s. The Vienna Jazz Festival
For two weeks every summer, Vienna abandons her classical history and gets all jazzed up. The concerts a blend of international jazz sensations as well as local artists. Past festivals have hosted stars like Randy Crawford, Bobby McFerrin, George Benson, Natalie Cole, Helge Schneider and Bryan Ferry. Check the company website for program updates, the schedule should be released sometime this spring. The dates are set from June 29th to July 8th. This is personally my favorite period of the Viennese summer (image by Andes Simbolon).
Wien Modern Festival
Contemporary music lovers rejoice, because Vienna has something for you as well. From visual arts, film and video to dance, performance, and street spectacles, this event is an international platform for the hottest new artists in contemporary music. Every year the theme changes, so you can come every year and never get bored. The festival runs from November 5th to 27th this year. The schedule, including this year’s theme, is due for release in June 2015.
